That temp. was measured after 5-6 minutes in 2nd gear on tick over with the car on stands.

Hi, I heard about a gear box overheating problem on oil rigs in the North sea many years ago (decades actually...).
When drilling very deep the gear boxes could get overheated before the drill was used to it's full length. To avoid the cost of stopping drilling and not use the full length of the drill they used an additive to the gearbox oil. It lowered the temperature enough to finish drilling. The additive was called Prolong, and I use it in all my cars. I have no connection with the company but am a very satisfied customer. Hope I'm not breaking any rules here...

I'm not easily or usually impressed by additives in general but the testimony of an oil rig engineer persuaded me that this one was different. Later my personal experiences has proved him right.

Does anyone know what the additive was that MMC (or Quaife??) put into the early bevel boxes? That is a very good question! It seems from my correspondence with Quaife in July 2014 that the dodgy substance, whatever it was, was installed at the factory without consulting Quaife. The MMC did not wish to discuss it at the time and I strongly doubt that there has been a policy change on that! There must be several people connected with the factory who know the answer.
