A Massive Pothole
Well, actually more of a disappearing road.
It is what is left of the A379 at Slapton Sands after the last storms. The damage is not repairable, the road will have to be moved inland about 40ft from the junction with road to Slapton village and the point where the A379 turns inland.
The alternative route is lengthy and involves lots of very narrow lanes.
Cost estimate is £2.1 to £3m.
Duration of repair? Who knows.

That road is always being eaten by the sea. As you may know the nearby village of Hallsands was eroded away in 1917 when the navy dredged the sand & shingle to expand Plymouth docks. As a kid you could play in the ruined houses & chapel but it is all now closed off due to erosion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallsands

Drive the Land Rover along there a couple of years ago. I know Richard posted some information after the event. I guess a Land Rover is one of the few vehicles that might negotiate the roadway... Isn't the inland side of the road a nature reserve? I wonder how that would impact relocation 40ft inland? Trust you had a good break down there - it's a lovely area. Hope you gave the tank a pat?

Graham, yes inland is a fresh water lake or Lee. There should be enough room but they can't keep doing.

Now thats what you call a pot hole. Its a tough decision for the local cash strapped council. Hopefully they will get some help from central funding.

About 10 tears ago MMC ran an advert with an Aero8 driving along that road.
It will be a sad loss if the road is lost.

Now thats what you call a pot hole. Its a tough decision for the local cash strapped council. Hopefully they will get some help from central funding. Central Government has stumped up £2.1m as a start. The new road sections will be a road-width back, BUT the big cost is putting in concrete piles to hold a proper sea wall, but I was told when finished it will be buried by the sand. Only if the sea takes the sand away will it be visible, and it will protect the road.

Concrete piles may well be hidden initially but will not prevent the fine pebble beach being eroded. Wartime dredging that took place well offshore may have lead to this gradual consequential effect.
Vertical sea walls are very bad for beach erosion and cause wave energy to be reflected back down the beach as seen at Dawlish and Teignmouth.
The solution at Sidmouth was to build offshore breakwaters and stone ballast piers. The Sidmouth beach later recovered with the pebble beach levels now back up to earlier levels.

There used to be a sea wall before the road. Just proves the power of the sea.
