under the bonnet oil cooler

I decided to change how I had my M3W oil cooler, I got the heat sink from summit racing and the fan is from JAGG. After I painted it all black it looked a little less "steam punk"

Rodger, how effective is this setup? Any concerns about heat affecting battery/ecu?

My thoughts too. Surely you can fit one between the front wheel & the car or build in an air scoop Cooling by air ideally needs high flow (AKA Reynolds number over 2000 to be in turbulent flow) and lots of fresh air.

Most M3Ws have an oil cooler mounted at the front where the number plate is to take effect of the high airflow as in this photo:

Originally I had one there however, the thermostat in the oil filter bypass did not work well, plus It was a step down from 1/2" to 3/8". I then put it up under the bonnet with a different bypass and all summer I found the engine ran ~15 degrees cooler. I then changed to this, but alas it is no longer summer. The fan really kicks out a lot of CFM, so we will see. I too thought about the heat under the bonnet.... but then I noticed this big black can right near the battery that seemed to be putting out a lot of heat.

I thought of doing EMIL's and it is well built but I also like to tinker and figure out hw I might do it.

had a chance to see how it worked today as the weather was quite pleasant. I might add I tried three different things.

1: there was an ultra cooler mounted on the front with a bypass off the filter. Turned out the thermostat in the bypass had failed and it never worked. Also I had to run 3/8 lines under the front frame piece--rather exposed. Oil temp got up to 230+ o the parkway

2. I put the ultra cool under the bonnet with a different hose based bypass. It did work, BUT once the fan came on it never cooled enough to shut it off. So up on the parkway on a day like today going 35-45 mph the oil temp was about 215 and the fan was always running.

3. Today I was close to the parkway and on a highway that is similar.... 45-60 mph and rarely in 5th gear. at ~209 and the fan would kick in. The oil temp would drop and at ~200 the fan would turn off. Came back on the freeway going 70+ and it took much longer to actually turn on the fan and it cooled enough to also cycle off.

Seems at 70 mph there is a lot of air circulating under the bonnet. Once the fan kicks in, the oil cools rather well
