We have been watching Alistair Armstrongs wander around Iceland on Channel 5.
I'd really like to go... it is magnificent, amazing and all the superlatives one can muster.
But not to eat some of their food "delicacies"....

Aage, nice picture. What period of the year, would you recommond to explore the Norway with a Morgan. I am also asking in view of mosquito-stories, and I would like to avoid being stung too much…

Aage, nice picture. What period of the year, would you recommond to explore the Norway with a Morgan. I am also asking in view of mosquito-stories, and I would like to avoid being stung too much…

Bert Bert, I assume the horror stories about the worst mosquito attacks can be addressed to the Finnmark plateau in Norway's northernmost county. However, this is an exaggeration..hehe. Mosquitoes are not bothersome along the Norwegian coast

But not to eat some of their food "delicacies".... Peter .. Iceland? ok, i agree to stay away from one of the Icelandic specialties- raw shark meat!  However, Norway is not that extreme when it comes to delicacies

In Bergen at the fish market we were given a small piece of smoked whale. Despite my misgivings it was lovely but we didn't buy any on principle
The food in Norway I felt was very Nordic (so like Sweden, Denmark & Finland). Stunning seafood & all very high quality. Mind you Iceland is the same.
Mr Armstrong's tour was a bit dumbed down. He missed the stunning history of the parliament, the N American European plates splitting leading to the volcanoes or the Vikings.
But he did show the beauty. If you can visit it is brilliant, ignore the cost of alcohol every thing else is London prices.
We went for the Northern Lights & weren't disappointed.

However, Norway is not that extreme when it comes to delicacies Sheep's eyeball, in a boiled sheep head? There are few things I wouldn't try, but that is one. I went to Iceland on a business trip in the md 2000s, Icelandic Lamb is wonderful and puffin is actually rather nice. The shark, fermented, is OK, but not my taste.

I prefer Durian to the Shark. Durian is a rather special Asian fruit. It smells very off (think a frying pan you used for steak and onions and left for a week or so) but taste lovely & has the texture of thick custard or very ripe mango.
Full of mercaptans (like garlic) it comes out for days in your sweat so it is not allowed on hotels or in planes in Indonesia & Malaysia.
I can recommend the veg market in Malacca they have all the cultivars & tasting is like fine wines. Mind you one stall holder told me I was the "first white ghost" he had known who liked Durian.

Yes, I forgot to mention the crazy dish "Smalahove" which is a scorched, smoked and boiled sheep head with eyeballs, nostrils and teeth. I HAVE NEVER TASTED IT, AND I NEVER WILL!!

Sadly my Mog is trapped in Spain for the moment but I do have a nice little MGB to travel about in Norway. The West coast is definitely a visit for everyone at some time or another. For those and myself included who wish to see what it is like on the West Cost of Norway try the YouTube Itchy Boots travels to Lofton area by Motorcycle.
