Air suspension for fourseater Morgan Plus 4

Today I picked up our 2008 Morgan Plus 4 fourseater from Brthen Bil where Trond Brthen had fittet a set of two additional dampers with built-in air springs and an on-board compressor. The compresssor is controlled by switches hidden under the dashboard.

Air springs are inherently progressive. Since it snowed today, I have not had the opportunity to test the car with passengers, but the first drive was impressive. The comfort level was far beyond my wildest expectations, and at the same time the car felt more stable and planted. Speed humps can now be traversed at normal speed. All in all, this seems to be a very good upgrade.

Just what I want for my 4 seater, next job is to fit the tramp bars and the spacer blocks from Mulberry thats centralises the rear axle, however I did email Brathen Bill and had no reply but thats what I want to fit to deal with the heavyweight lads I got in the back.

Its quite unlikely that Morgan will ever re-introduce a 4 seater again, so 4 seater fans may be restricted to the traditional chassis, suspension and its inherent weaknesses. Having said that reading thru the catalogue of CX problems that are now emerging, I seriously doubt whether that is a route I would follow anytime soon, despite it being an attractive package, it too has its weaknesses.

As a 5 link SSL rear kit doesn't fit the 4 seater, I'm very attracted to concept of air suspension possibly front and rear and would like to hear people views on the practical issues such a system may re-present, and whether or not it may be a very viable solution to the range of load the 4 seater may be subjected too and of course for a Roadster, help deal with ground clearance issues especially over sleeping policemen, on an off ferries etc and maybe help deal with some of the axle tramp from the Roadster.

Secondly I had never heard of the Mulfab developed independent front suspension, does anyone have any further details on it, is it still in production and most importantly did it work. Its clear that maybe there is still room for development of the traditional chassis and with the price differential between most trads and the CX offers scope for funding further improvements, which may improve the lasting appeal of the trad and make it a more viable alternative to the CX

Any thoughts?.

I have tried to get a bit more information on this from the chap in Norway. Evidently the Paris Peking car when from the air to a pair of coil shocks as would be more reliable and simpler. However I have struggled to find a pair of shocks short enough to fit the post 2005 4 seater setup. I fitted a Rutherford stamper bracket to the new BSC Anti tramp leaf springs but it is still to short for the Harley air setup, you need a custom bracket that drops the mounting point down further.

We have now just accepted that post 2005 4 seaters can carry adults in the back without bottoming out..

Really interesting read Bjorn .... sounds like the Norwegians are putting the same kind of inventiveness into their Mogs as the Swedes do into their Harley Chops 🙂

Don't he shy ... what are the "some other non-Mogs' from your signature 😁
