Mark Twain quoted Benjamin Disraeli as saying "There are three kinds of lies; lies, damned lies and statistics". With so many different University rankings out there you can pretty much find one to prove anything you want. (BTW - overall Exeter seems to vary between 7th and 13th in the UK universities in the rankings of the broadsheet newspapers).

The figures I used came from the Russel Group's own rankings but as you say, the various parameters used by the different surveys vary hugely.
For example, it's possible to move a University up significantly in some tables ( eg " The Times") by building more hall of residence places!! While the much- vaunted NSS ( National Student Survey) is so easy to skew it's unbelievable
