The leather stitched part which holds the elasticated hoop
will pass through the chrome strap hole but the first time takes some perseverance. I had the same problem with my Plus 8 and would have given up except that when I took delivery of the car the case and straps were already installed. My problem was getting them off! They had obviously gone on so I thought they must come off. With a lot of patience, some washing up liquid and a squashed thumb nail I eventually succeeded.
The more I use the straps the easier it has become to install and remove them.
If you'd rather the straps passed through the guide then I recommend that you have another go, however, if you're prone to the occasional expletive then try the first attempt away from the childrens' earshot.
