I think the massive excess is to cover the cost of a clam replacement - easily damaged, and allegedly about that cost to put right. Clam damage can be very superficial and this way, you would probably have it repaired. Tub damage, according to the forums usually leads to a write off. It would make a nice home rebuild project on a new tub though.......
