I did some research on the topic and it is nice to know there is an explanation for what I have been doing. Seems it can be caused by even minute movement due to vibration or differences in thermal expansion.

It also makes me realise that there is a good reason for oiling the body joints (as recommended) on our Morgans. I wonder if that explains some of the corrosion and paint bubbling around fittings and joints, particularly on the Aero series.
