No don't put ideas like touring India on a bike in mind - that would be a nice leisurely one out there.
The simpler the mechanics and lack of electrons flying to every vestige of the bike the more survivable you are, and as you say you don't need an Engineering Masters to fix it the average roadside bike shop cando.
