If we are talking about the cobra? then I am aware of a few people who have removed it, on my 2002 it would not leave a hole. DaveW has some info on how the cobra is fitted.
Whilst I think a trad looks nicer without it, I would not remove mine, partially because of safety, but primarily because of insurance implications.
