When I had ss wires the cleaning was a pig but oh so worth while in the end. I used diluted Bilberry juice sprayed on and agitated by brush. If polishing - Autosol followed by a rinse and a wheel wax. regular wash with shampoo and a washing mit kept for the wheels only was all needed on a regular basis.
I also used to wipe the wheel inners clean too but not after EVERY run!
Now I have alloys and its a much easier job - my fingers are recovering after the mauling by the spoked wheels.
