You are correct, it is a Series 2 - the first Aero type designed for the USA. An S3 would have the same engine but the revised BMW Mini sourced headlights, instead of the VW Beetle ones (as fitted to the S1 and S2).

The S2 has the lowest production numbers, although in the USA, I believe they are the most common Aero derivative.
