I believe this is unique thing to Cirrus aircraft. It comes down vertically, and seems to work, as plenty of occurences with a good outcome.
Usually only used if pilot loses control (eg disoriented in cloud) or has perhaps had a medical emergency.
Expensive decision to deploy one as the plane is written off (iro £200K)
