Alfasud, one could literally translate as Southern Alfa, was the result of an Italian government initiative that forced Fiat into opening a factory in southern Italy to give work to the region. In effect they finished up employing a lot of inexperienced people who had no real interest other than gaining an income for the least possible effort. It is absolutely no wonder that they had quality control disasters. The factory still exists and quality has improved enourmously but it continues to be a thorn in the side for Fiat, mainly over disputes with the workforce, despite continually acheiving awards for efficient production and study visits by experts from all around the world.

Currently produces the Panda range.
