From having driven Shelsley Walsh competitivly the bend to watch out for is the last real one, and is not always inspected properly by drivers as it is almost the top of a steep climb.
The final bend in the 'S' is narrow, well cambered, and overhung by trees. If you go a bit wide of the correct line on most other bends, usually no real harm done and you can correct and carry on. The outside of the 'S' gets gravel, mud and moss, and... stays wet long after the rest of the course has dried out. Go wide there, and you'll have an accident.
Non-competitive driving, as fast as you'd go on the road with the proviso you know no-one is coming the other way. Unless you are an idiot...
As for insurance, never had competition insurance over perhaps 20 years of driving. Cost me about £300 in bits over the years for minor accidents, but I do most repairs myself.
