Hello all,
I'm Alberto, live in Milan and just became a very proud owner of a almost new 2010 4/4 sport.
What to say? Since my early days I have always been fascinated with sportscars in general, British in particular. Within such attraction I soon developed a strong interest on traditional Morgans.
As soon as I could afford it I bought a Mazda MX5, a very nice car, which I kept until my second son was born and which I then passed to my younger brother. Contextually I went through a series of the usual German corporate sedans, very useful for a young and growing family but, well, not much exciting.
Time passed until last summer when I planned a golfing trip to Scotland with my wife. At the last time she had to forfeit as she was kept to Milan for work. What better an opportunity to rent a Morgan rather than the usual suspects?
And so I was to RPM Morgan in Perthshire trying to make my golf clubs and travel bag fit into the rented red +4!
The result was a thrilling week spent on twisted country roads leading to ferry boats, leading to islands and to other sheep-filled country roads ending each day on a different golf course, a different hotel and then another ferry.
Great holiday!
Upon returning the +4 I had the opportunity to talk with Russel and his team at RPM, and to note the different subtle differences between all the models he had there. I ended up with a clear idea of my preferred Morgan: 4/4 or +4, traditional hood, preferably short door (before 1997)
I prefer the lines of the short door model, as well as I prefer the pre-superformed, more streamlined wing styles.
So for my 40th birthday I decided to allow myself a middle-age present! The budget allocated could buy me a not much used Porsche 997 s Cabrio (the choice all my friends would have made) and a almost new MOrgan 4/4.
I found many Porsches I could buy with the money and I found very few pre-1997 Morgans.
After some drives, though, made up my mind on the driving experience and, although the 911 is absolutely a stunning car, in a way to fully enjoy it you need to have good fast roads ahead, otherwise it is not THAT much different to my corporate BMW in the normal driving.
What keeps me surprised when in a Morgan, in contrast, is how much can you get with little availability of road and how exciting is even at very low speeds, how much it can get you in contact with the road.
Another thing I made up my mind is that, although I keep preferring the pre-1997 style, I enjoy more both the ride and the perceived quality of the modern models.
So here I am with my new 4/4 sport, pretty bare on specs (no door handles, no luggage rack and, of course, no spare wheel) but with enough character to provide a great basis for future upgrades.
As you could see, I took my decision with my heart. :-)
See you around!
A
