Most rev counters today work by impulse and are tuned to a particular vehicle by sequencing miniature switches inside the unit. I've seen two types, one with four switches and one with eight, although from the front they look the same. So to fit a new one to your car you will need to know the sequencing of the switches, and any other commissioning actions - like ignition on/off etc.
