Strangely enough, when my compensator was getting very noisy, the only time it went quiet was just after I washed around about the gearbox a bit enthusiastically with a hose. Once it had been run about and allowed to dry the rattles came back.
The drilling of the hole is part of the installation of the new style compensator.
