Those finding the restricted width in the pedal area a problem might want to consider removing the accelerator and moving the brake and clutch assembly over to the right. Then fit a hand throttle to a steering wheel spoke like the twin cylinder cars had back in the day. This would create space for the left foot when it is at rest and add a touch of retro.
Do keep in mind that back then there was only three quarters of a turn from one lock to the other; I suspect the 5-speed cars have lower gearing which could cause a cable problem.
