A few years ago I had a fire in my Porsche 911. It was at the height of summer and I had just had my freon topped up in the aircon, and was driving with it on. Smoke started to come through the air vents!
There is an auxiliary blower in the front boot of the 911 Carrera. It had shorted and caught the carpet on fire. As you may know, the petrol tank is also in the front boot of a 911. Fortunately I had a (dry powder) extinguisher in the car. I was close to a large quite empty parking lot, pulled in, grabbed the extinguisher, raised the boot lid and drenched it. The fire was out in a few seconds. I then ripped out the bad wiring, drove home very cautiously (about 6 miles), then inspected the damage which was minimal. I used a shop vac to pick up all the residue powder, ordered a new auxiliary blower and carpet, and when it arrived, I re-wired it in.
I've always carried extinguishers in my older cars. I have a Halon one in my +8.
