I find that the 50mm spacer gives a bit more leverage without restricting movement. I have always preferred to have the wheel relatively close and for me the straight-arm stuff increases effort too much. In many cars, once I have the seat/pedal distance perfect (which is not possible in the M3W), the wheel is too much of a stretch.

Driving ergonomics are rather complex.
