I think Kin has the right idea with his Toyota Prius; although, and perhaps he can answer this, my local Toyota rep said to me that he didn't feel they were well suited to people who do a lot of motorway miles?
You probably can't go too far wrong with what you already have - the BMW 5-Series diesels. If you can handle a smaller car, the BMW 120d with start-stop technology also gets 60+ mpg (real world).
Need something bigger, and want a change, the Mercedes CLS TDI gets good reviews as does the Lexus GS450h (h for Hybrid).
Those are a few ideas.
