Well got it home after an eventful journey. About 100 miles in I lost the use of the clutch and pulled into a petrol station. called the AA and was helped by a very nice man (!) who diagnosed a pretty poor bodge to the clutch operating mechanism.
There is no clutch cable but there was a rod which had been made up of a couple of bolts ground down and welded together which had snapped at the weld. Clever AA man improvised something similar with a length of threaded rod and that got me home safely. He advises getting someone to fit a clutch cable asap - any thoughts?!
Apart from that the car went very well and I enjoyed the drive despite it taking a couple of hours longer than I'd planned!
