Beginning with the Series II 4/4, which had a 3 speed gearbox, through the early Series V's, an extension had to be used for the actual gearshift to reach the driver. Due to its design, the gearshift was fitted too far forward to be reached by the driver. The solution, if you want to call it that, was to run a shaft under the dashboard, through the bulkhead/firewall, into the engine compartment, and attach it to what is normally the location of the shift knob as a "swivelling ball". This ball is attached to a straight vertical shaft which runs downward into the gearbox. The end result of all this
is an unusual shift pattern whereby shifting requires an up and down movement of the shift shaft. On the later Series V models an optional "Wooller Remote Change" was offered which served to convert the arrangement to the normal "H" pattern.
