Absolutely agree with you. The Throttle Bodies are great fun - but the reality is that you have to really drive up at the top end of the tach to get the benefit.
I personally particularly enjoy swapping the cogs and revving the engine= Throttle Bodies.
Throttle Bodies don't really equate to torque - as Gamalunga says displacement and turbo/ super chargers are more relevant if that is your " thing"
A sports air filter by its self does make more induction noise and the car will have maybe 1-bhp more, the real gain is the filter is for life and a one off purchase.
The cheap route to get some power at about £500.00
The standard air box with a K&N filter to a cold air induction 56mm die to a 76mm reducer. Add a none restrictive silencer side exit, and the scores on the doors went up to 102 lbf/ft133BHP.
My Stock Sport dyno readings before the change of 98 lbf/ft and BHP @114.
With a manifold fitted there will be more to have and a larger die cold air induction pipe but not much the next step in none throttle body power will be a Re-Map to the stock ECU.
Throttle bodies once the Dyno work has been set for the engine can be tuned by changing the length of the intake trumpets to gain more torque but this is at the cost of BHP.
In truth I love my Sigma engine the revs the light weight giving a good power to weight ratio for the Sport coupled with Fuel economy. If you have disposable cash then the ultimate is Throttle bodies and a Cam a bit of headwork and some con rods pistons and hay presto 200bhp engine... which on the 4/4Sport with narrow tyres she would be an absolute ASBO to

Maybe just a super charger will work!!!
