The earlier versions have a nut on the top of the cap which holds a short dipstick underneath. The cap itself does unscrew but is often on quite tight - try a gloved hand or a rag to get a decent grip on the (hot) cap. Also you need to check the oil level with the engine reasonably hot and within a few minutes of switching it off or you can get a false low reading.
