As Peter (recycled-teenager) has indicated the Plus 8 is an easy car to drive fairly quickly and has a very sure footed feel about it in the dry.
They command respect in the wet however normally taught through experience, I had my first Plus 8 break away on some damp new tarmac and the back comes around very quickly luckily I lifted in time but this was a very lucky escape and taught me a lot.
The first was a 1994 +8 with standard 15" alloys.
My present one is a 1999 +8 with 7" X 16" Centre Locking Alloys, both models have Rack and Pinion Steering with unmodified suspension other than Koni's fitted on each corner of my present model.
At no time have I felt either cars steering to be heavy or the handling cumbersome, you can tell when it needs a greasing though if you are attuned to the car.
My 4/4 Sport was a totally different but highly enjoyable experience very light and agile and quick providing it's dry. The small footprint these cars have makes them want to break away and not stop too well in the wet if pressing on a bit.
The Plus 8 stops very well in the wet is my experience.
It is a very relaxing car to drive due to bags of torque and makes a great long legged tourer.
They are a delight to drive if they have been taken care of and are regularly serviced - this is vital to a good experience.
There are some rough ones out there and not necessarily the older ones.
