Sounds like you have (or more likely someone else) has over tightened the inner side of the latch...

The springs are not too stong as long as the mechanism is not over-tightened.

Try loostening the nut on the inner side of the wing where the spring is and testing the slide... if it's too stiff you've gone too far tightening it up.
