Change the fluid every 2 years...do clutch and brakes at same time.
Hygroscopic nature means it will deteriorate.
From your description of the pedal travel and " bite" point a fluid change is the best first option.
Persistent problems could then be master/ slave cylinder servicing needed.
Also.... check the gear remote for function. There could be rubber bush wear or even the " dust cap" over the lever issues. See Gomog site workshop manual for details.
If all these fail then it's the BIG JOB - clutch out to check/ repair!
