At those prices I think with the benefit of hindsight you would have been better off with your suggestion of shipping the car back or even to Germany for repair.
Unfortunately these repairs just "grow" sometimes and you have no option but to bite the bullet and pay. You have my sympathy I guess most experienced drivers have experienced a similar situation I know I have on a previous tintop whilst on holiday and it's painful
It will make getting behind the wheel again even more precious
