The Australian Design Rules are quite restrictive with many aspects unique compared to similar standards around the world - who knows why. The rules around placement of indicators and brake lights for instance - just downloaded the relevant page from the ADR's (attached here). What a nightmare....seems to have something to do with visibility from certain heights and angles. I recall some four wheel drives here are required to have separate tail lights added to rear bumpers instead of the standard factory units, presumably for the same reasons as why the M3W front lights are mounted higher.
The local taxes are also punitive - a 33% luxury tax on cars with a value over A$61,884 (or A$75,375 if a "fuel efficient" vehicle) is a joke - no other "luxury" item in this county has an extra tax added, only car enthusiasts are gouged. Once a car hits the luxury tax limits the cost of any option added also has LCT applied. The LCT also applies to imported used cars - a while back I was chatting to a chap at a classic car show and his friend had a DB5 on display that he imported from the UK - LCT applied to that car, landed cost was over A$700,000.
