Latest Update:
I test fitted the new units and realised that the bits of wood, to which the speakers are fixed (incorrectly) have cut outs that are too large so it is possible to see light round the unit. This is a basic flaw in loudspeaker design that I'll have to rectify.
The speakers are also fitted incorrectly in that they have been fitted from the back, so that the flexible edge round the bass unit touches the wood. Speakers should be inserted from the front so the chassis seats on the wood, leaving the cone free to move.
So, I have to remove the bulkhead in order to rectify the "bodge" used by MMC. Why do I say "bodge"?
Well the holes in the nicely trimmed aluminium are not large enough to allow a 6 x 9 speaker to be inserted from the front....
Hence the rear mounting used by MMC.
What started out as a simple little job is turning into a major rebuild as it seems the wooden filler plates are glued to the aluminium... !
