Your thoughts mirror mine exactly - so I have joined the Cotswold Classic Car Club. I am still a member of SpotMog, and they are a lovely bunch of people, it's just that they don't seem to want to talk about cars much, and most of their events seem to be during the day when I'm at work, and involve 'brown shoe' lunches and/or golf. Nothing wrong with that at all, it's what they want to do, but not for me.
