Yes, If you have a poor earth or pushed back pin there is a chance it will find an earth through another component. It can cause all sorts of weird effects. For instance, brake lights flashing with indicators. It was common in older cars for the light units to corrode causing problems like this but I don't think that is your problem.
There is an earth rail that runs along the bottom of the dashboard switches. Make sure everything is fitted here and nothing adrift. You can see quite clearly through the hole with the box removed. It is the wire that links the switches. Bottom of switch if I remember.
Also, There is a control module for the brake warning light which may have been one of the relays you pulled out. The brake warning light is also a brake fluid level warning light.
