Mechanical skills help you diagnose and repair quicker to get you back on the road sooner. This becomes relevant because understandably MMC do not have the warranty and repair infrastructure of volkswagen or toyota.
it is best to order the required parts before the car goes into the dealer... so they are there already.

Otherwise you will have to wait for a repair slot. Then the parts and then fitment. Whereas, If you know whats wrong it only takes one afternoon to fix almost all problems.


But this pre-assumes you're going to have problems. There is no reason to assume you WILL have problems.

It's not for owners to tell dealers what to order, but let the dealer do the diagnosis, surely? That's what they do. If they don't, then that's a different matter.
