Just a quick update. In case anyone is interested. The reason its taken 3 months to complete this is that I had house renovations to undertake at the same time.
Anyhooo...
Installed the SPAL "Hi Performance" 13in fan. It fits - but only just.
It was impossible to mount it on the cross tube clamps so I ended up using the SPAL through radiator mounts. These are steel versus the usual plastic ones. So hopefully will be impervious to temperature and anything else which degrades plastics.
I also installed a high flow thermostat and a new engine driven water pump.
So far this all works very well - in traffic, with OAT of 25C, the indicated temperature never goes past the middle of the scale.
The fan is noisy. In the grand scheme of things, a bit of noise is far better than having to avoid traffic at all costs, which was my previous temperature management strategy. So I'm now about to install an audio system of sorts to drown out the noise of the fan

Radiator issue:
I don't know if my radiator is correct or not - its copper/brass and it sure looks brutal enough to have been a factory original.
It did not have any of the rubber mounting bobbins to protect it from vibration.
When I tried to install it with new (smallest that I could buy) bobbins, the radiator was sitting too high up - such that the nose cowl would not fit.
So, I then reworked the mounts using a pile of soft rubber suspension bushings and a two 4 inch bolts to suspend the radiator under the bracket. This seems to work. The radiator is now very softly mounted both top and bottom.
Once again, many thanks to everyone for their invaluable advice, without which, I would have been buggered.
