Yes, this was certainly a crude design, but it is possible a shaft design could have been engineered more effectively without eliminating passenger space. My assumption would be that the final Morgan design was probably the cheaper option (and possibly lighter)

Don't disagree, but if you want a narrow and low body that can be easily built for LHD and RHD then to keep two adequate side by side seats the transmission tunnel pretty much has to be central and narrow then you have to step the drive sideways in a short distance to one side to clear the tyre. The shaft-bevel-belt arrangement is quite a reasonable solution...however, the implementation may be just a tad less than ideal...
