The logical progression of the Dave theory is that no would ever have changed a filter in the lifetime of the car and the filter would have long since ceased functioning and been on bypass - not for me but I'm difficult to please when it comes to caring for my car.
I've seen all these new theories come and go before and in general if it's easy there will be a trade off that catches you out.
Filters and oil are cheap and as hamwich said an oil change is the simplest of all jobs.
