I think that the ten years quoted is just a convenient length of time for the test cycles. Virtually all modern cars should exceed that age without any problem these days. I suspect that the deciding factor in scrapping a car will be the cost of replacing failed electronics in the future....or changing legislation.

I'd like to see a robot opening and closing Morgan doors and bonnets over a ten year test cycle! They'd probably tear the bonnets off in frustration!
