I wondered if anyone would mention that. Yes it is a polenta machine. Probably if you get polenta outside of Italy it is likely to be the instant type. Real polenta takes a long time to cook. In its most simple form it is cooked coarse ground maize, a bit like a porridge made with maize. It takes a long time to cook and must be constantly stired. The traditional method was to cook it in a copper pot hanging over an open fire and stired using a wooden stick. Now you can buy a machine which is a rounded copper pot mounted in a frame which also carries an electric motor that drives a rotating aluminium paddle. It makes life much easier for the cook and her assistants smile
