Yes, the illumination is through the plate.
I seem to remember a TVR had the same system, was it the Cerbera?
MMC had fitted the current production plate when I came to collect it, but I asked them to put the original back on. Their fear was that it could be a problem when it comes to MOT time, but I have spoken to a friendly MOT garage and they can't forsee any problem.
