It needs to be "within a whisker" or, we were a "hairs breath" away. The first is obvious but I've no idea of the origins of the latter? but I bet someone on here does
I was driving a rented van last year and the satnav had me in stitches, it gave instructions like "keep driving for some distance", "turn left soon" and "traffic congestion en route" - all very helpful!
