Living 140 miles from Malvern, this means that I could not even visit the factory (if I so desired), unless I could fully recharge whilst I was there.

If I was to own one of these, I would be constantly looking at the odometer (or the "state of charge" meter, assuming it has one) and worrying that I may not find a charging point before the batteries go flat, which would obviously result in being stranded, possibly miles from anywhere.

I agree and worse is that typically a batteries capacity after peaking during the first few charge/discharge cycles, then starts a slow downhill run on capacity. That 75 mile safe radius is going to diminish.

I'm not sure if its relevant to the batteries used on the EV3, but I remember reading that whilst Li-on battery technology was discovered nearly a hundred years ago, it wasn't until the 90's that the neccessary charge control technology was perfected. The main issue with this type is charge instability. Careful monitoring is required especially towards end of life when excess charge current could otherwise lead to heat build up and ultimately explosion. To prevent this internal circuitry may decide suddenly to shut battery down (brick it) forever.
