I'm really surprised now you mention it that the Defiant didn't have forward mounted guns as most latter WW1 aircraft had forward mounted guns and also many post war did as well - the Gloucester Gladiator had 4 forward guns - two synchronised Vickers on the fuselage and a couple more on the wing I think

So it seems quite an oddity
