As per DaveW try the dimmer switch. Mine was playing up by dimming the lights fully.
I disconnected and reconnected the push on terminals on it and it was ok after that.
Why it is there I don't know. Why drive at night unable to see the clocks?
If it plays up again I may just bypass it.
