I went last year, France, Germany Switzerland and my understanding is that you don't need a helmet (and I didn't wear one most of the time). Saw quite a few police during the trip when not wearing a helmet and they just waved! Probably a good idea to wear one whilst hammering it down the autobahn for a safety point of view.
