Not sure if it would work as I have never tried it but some of the Harley lads used to use shower caps over their brake discs if they were having a major clean, they would drop the wheel out and pop one or two on (with twin discs) and pressure wash away. I never saw the point as if your cleaning that well buy some brake cleaner and clean the disc up afterwards anyway. I prefer a cardboard shield and some degreaser and a paintbrush then some warm water in a 'rose sprayer' to wash off and finish with an airline, then I give the rebound Spring a good soak in motorbike chain lube before rebinding with a leather shroud and cable ties.
Is that just the Aerosol chain lube you spray on Colin, my springs were chock full of black grease when I got the car, especially the lower springs, and I am slowly picking it out with cloths, and when I greased it I wiped away all the grease that bulges out before it can clog up the springs again. I had thought of using a lanolin spray (that the 4x4 guys spray on the underside of their cars) after cleaning too as its thin and sprays easily, also I have a bottle left from my Jeep days
Is it just to protect from rust?
I like the idea of gaiters around the springs too to keep grit out. Do you use heavy or light weight leather to make them up?
