We both have phones and tablets here but use dedicated Automotive satnavs in all our cars we have tried various apps paid and free on the phones for us dedicated satnavs are the best option, my Garmin has proven particularly robust, swmbo has TomTom my Toyota uses a nicely integrated TomTom in its info centre, when my Garmin dies - it will one day no doubt - I'll probably go for the nuvicam model which has the following

Quote:
nüviCam: Guides. Alerts. Assists
All-in-one 6.0-inch premium sat nav with built-in dash cam and driver awareness features
Detailed maps of Europe with free lifetime1 map updates and digital traffic2, the best traffic avoidance solution available from Garmin
Free Garmin DIGITAL Traffic via DAB - Garmin's best traffic solution - out of the box!
Integrated dash cam continuously records your drive and automatically saves files on impact
Forward Collision Warning3 alerts if you drive too close to the car ahead
Lane Departure Warning3 alerts if you drift off the road or into oncoming traffic
Garmin Real Vision™ displays camera view when approaching select destinations

I don't like cooking my phone being on permanent charge etc
