It was ever thus. In the seventies I commuted 25 miles each way in my Midget and rarely didn't get through. Often in appalling weather and deep snow.

Invariably those who lived in the town didn't show up for work.

That town was Chesterfield. One of the employees lived at Matlock - a testing drive there in snow. He always got through in his Viva HC with a bag of cement in the boot.
